In the last few years, there has been a surge of interest in living and retiring in Belize. And for good reason. Let’s take a look at what Belize has to offer people who are planning their retirement or who are already enjoying their retirement years.
1. Affordable real estate
While affordability is not necessarily the main attraction of retiring or semi-retiring in Belize, it certainly is an incentive for many of us. Reasonably priced condos and villas are widely available. Be sure to research the market before buying.
2. Government program for retirees
The Belize government actively encourages foreign retirees to seek residency. People 45 and over can apply to be a Qualified Retired Person, which among other things, entitles you to full residency and numerous tax breaks. Check our Retire in Belize page for more info.
3. Language
The official language in Belize is English. This can be a great benefit, particularly when dealing with residency issues and real estate transactions.
4. Nature, beaches & ruins
Belize is a diverse and beautiful country. From coastal areas that offer some of the best snorkeling and scuba in the Caribbean to mountains and rain forests, Belize is a great choice for retirees looking for activity and adventure. The Mayan ruins throughout the country are also a delight to explore.
5. Easy access
There are many direct international flights to Belize, which makes visiting the country easy. From some cities in the USA, you can travel to Belize City in just two hours. This is great if you are only living there part of the year or if you plan to welcome family and friends to your Caribbean dream home.
6. Stable economy and politics
It is comforting to know that Belize has a stable economy and political system. Formerly part of the British Empire, it still has strong ties with the UK, as well as Central American and Caribbean countries.
7. Large expat and retirement community
If you are looking for fellow expats, Belize is a good place to retire or semi-retire. A large expat community has developed in Belize, due primarily to the country’s affordability and natural beauty.
